Greater Family Health Honors Dr. Mark Thompson’s Legacy of Service

Greater Family Health recently gathered staff, leadership, and board members to celebrate the retirement of Dr. Mark Thompson, a beloved physician whose impact on the organization spans its entire 25-year history. Having served as a volunteer in the organization’s earliest days and later dedicating more than 20 years as a provider and leader, Dr. Thompson leaves behind a remarkable legacy of steadfast commitment to community health.

The retirement celebration brought together team members who have worked alongside Dr. Thompson throughout his career, including members of Greater Family Health’s Board of Directors and executive leadership team. During the event, President and CEO V. Guadalupe Fonseca reflected on Dr. Thompson’s instrumental role in helping build the organization from the ground up. She highlighted Dr. Thompson’s leadership as Medical Director, noting that many of the systems, processes, and standards that continue to guide patient care today were established with his involvement.

“Dr. Thompson really helped build this organization from the ground up,” Fonseca shared. “Many of the things we do today are because of the foundation he helped create.”

Dr. Thompson was then presented with a proclamation plaque by none other than Donna Anderson, affectionately known as the Mother of Greater Family Health. The plaque read:

Dr. Stephannie Davies, Greater Family Health’s Chief Medical Officer, also spoke during the ceremony, recognizing the profound influence Dr. Thompson has had on patients, providers, and staff over the past two decades.

“Thousands of patients have received not only excellent medical care, but also kindness, reassurance, and dignity during some of the most important moments of their lives,” she said. “His wisdom, integrity, and dedication have left a lasting imprint on all of us.”

In his remarks, Dr. Thompson reflected on a career rooted in a calling to serve underserved communities. Prior to joining Greater Family Health, he and his family spent years serving as medical missionaries in Haiti and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. When circumstances brought them back to Illinois, he found a new opportunity to continue that mission through what was then known as Greater Elgin Family Care Center.

“In a very special way, we were able to take care of the underserved in Elgin,” Dr. Thompson said. “I feel so blessed to have been able to fulfill what I felt I was being called to do.”

He expressed gratitude to his wife, Sandy, his family, the organization’s leadership team, support staff, fellow providers, and the medical assistants who supported him throughout his career. He also shared his appreciation for the collaborative culture that has defined Greater Family Health over the years.

As the organization prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary, Dr. Thompson’s retirement serves as a reminder of the people whose dedication, vision, and compassion helped shape Greater Family Health into the organization it is today. Having been part of the organization since its founding, his influence will continue to be felt through the countless patients served, colleagues mentored, and systems established during his tenure.

While we will miss seeing Dr. Thompson in our organization, we are grateful for his extraordinary service and wish him a retirement filled with health, happiness, family, and new adventures. Thank you, Dr. Thompson, for 20+ years of helping fulfill our mission and making a lasting difference in the communities we serve.
