Flu Season ’26-’27: What to Know and How to Prepare

Flu Season '26-'27 What to know and how to prepare
It’s that time of year again

Changing leaves, pumpkin spice lattes, and trick-or-treaters at the door. It is also the season when many of us come into contact with influenza, commonly known as the flu. Influenza is a respiratory virus that spreads mainly through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. We have several ways to help prevent and treat infection, including vaccination, everyday prevention practices, and medications used to treat active infection.

Why the flu vaccine changes each year

Each year, the WHO and FDA determine the recommended flu vaccine formulation based on influenza viruses circulating worldwide. By late summer or early fall, the updated vaccine is typically available for distribution to community health clinics, private practices, pharmacies, and other vaccination sites.

When to get vaccinated

Current recommendations for the 2026– 2027 flu season, which runs approximately from September through May, include the following:

  • Most adults: Vaccination during July and August should generally be avoided unless there is concern that vaccination later in the season may not be possible.
  • Children who require two doses: Certain children aged 6 months through 8 years require two doses of influenza vaccine for the season. These children should receive their first dose as soon as possible so the second dose, given at least four weeks later, can ideally be completed by the end of October.
  • Pregnant persons: For pregnant persons in the first or second trimester, vaccination in September or October is preferred. Vaccination during the third trimester has been associated with reduced risk of influenza illness in infants during the first months after birth, when they are too young to receive influenza vaccine.

Greater Family Health offers Flulaval and Fluarix for the 2026–2027 influenza season for both employees and our patients. By receiving a flu vaccine, we help protect ourselves, our patients, our families, and everyone around us. Let’s all do our part this season to fight flu 2026–2027.
