Greater Family Health to Open Health Center in Wheeling, IL

Greater Family Health has received federal funding to open the first Federally Qualified Health Center in Wheeling. Opening in August 2015, Greater Family Health will be located at 300 McHenry Rd, Wheeling, IL.

Announced by Health and Human Services’ Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell on May 5th, funding for Greater Family Health comes from the Affordable Care Act, and is allocated by the Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources Services Administration.

The announcement comes after more than a year of planning and as a result of an application submitted by Greater Family Health in September 2014. The application was supported by the entire health care infrastructure in the northwest suburbs, a multitude of social service and human service organizations and numerous key stakeholders, and is 1 of only 4 funded applications in Illinois. A total of 164 applications were funded of some 500 submitted.

“We look forward to expanding high-quality, affordable primary health care services to the residents of Wheeling, Prospect Heights and the surrounding communities,” said Bob Tanner, President and CEO of Greater Family Health. “Our partnership with the existing health care system in the northwest suburbs will increase access to primary health care services, reduce costs and improve the overall health of the area,” Tanner concluded.

Greater Family Health expects to offer pediatric and family medicine care initially, with obstetric/ gynecological services and psychiatry soon thereafter.

Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) focus on providing primary health care and numerous other services to people who are uninsured and/or publicly insured. In 2013, 1,153,336 unduplicated patients received medical, dental or mental health services at one of the 42 FQHCs in Illinois. Nationally, there are over 1,200 FQHCs, providing care to over 21 million patients.

Greater Family Health offers health care services out of 29 health care access points, seven of which are full-time locations in Elgin, McHenry, Streamwood and Sycamore. Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Family Medicine, Gynecology, Psychiatry, Dental Care and an array of supportive services are offered. The organization presently provides care to almost 38,000 people via over 125,000 medical and dental appointments annually.

Greater Family Health is accredited by The Joint Commission, indicating compliance with the highest quality standards of health care in the United States, is certified as a Patient Centered/Primary Care Medical Home and provides care regardless of the patient’s ability to pay.
