Bridging the Gap: Bilingual Support Leads to Behavioral Health Access

Bilingual Support

A family of four recently visited Greater Family Health seeking information about available services. The Receptionist quickly recognized that the parents were having difficulty communicating in English and kindly asked if Spanish would be more comfortable for them. They responded with an enthusiastic “yes,” and the conversation continued in Spanish.

During the visit, the Receptionist overheard the father mention on a phone call that they were hoping to find a specialist for their son, who was experiencing fidgeting, difficulty focusing, and disruptive behavior in the classroom. Recognizing the urgency, the Receptionist informed the family that the health center has Physicians who can conduct an initial behavioral assessment.

The parents were immediately interested. The Receptionist explained that Greater Family Health offers pediatric behavioral health services, which seemed to bring the family a sense of relief. However, the mother expressed concern about their insurance coverage, believing it was no longer accepted in the area. Upon reviewing the insurance card, the Receptionist confirmed that the family was covered by a plan accepted by the health center.

Grateful and reassured, the parents expressed their appreciation for the support and information they received. The Receptionist scheduled appointments for the children, provided a reminder card, and gave them a brochure to take home. The family left feeling hopeful and thankful, knowing their son was finally on the path to receiving the care he needed.
