Flu, RSV, and COVID-19: Protect Your Family This Season

With kids heading back to school and the weather still nice, it’s hard to believe respiratory virus season is coming up! Although respiratory viruses circulate all year long, cases spike during the fall and winter months. There are many similar symptoms of the common cold, influenza (flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and coronavirus (COVID-19).

Since these four respiratory viruses share similar symptoms, you may be wondering how to tell which virus you or your family member may have. There is no test for the common cold but there are tests to diagnose flu, RSV, and COVID-19. The chart below from the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases shows the different symptoms that you may experience:

How to tell the difference between flu, RSV, COVID-19, and the common cold.
What is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones?

Vaccinate!

There are vaccines available for flu, COVID-19, and RSV. There is no vaccine for the common cold. Talk to your Provider about getting vaccinated this upcoming season.

Wash your hands!

Keep your hands clean by using soap and clean water to scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. If soap and clean water are not available, you can use hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth unless your hands are clean.

Avoid close contact!

When possible, stay home when you are sick and avoid close contact with people who are sick. If not possible, you can wear a mask to minimize the risk of spreading a virus.

Practice good respiratory etiquette!

Cough or sneeze into your arm, sleeve, or tissue. Dispose of any used tissue in the trash.
