Pertussis, also known as “Whooping Cough,” is seeing a significant increase in cases across the United States. As of December 7th, Illinois has reported 2,025 cases this year, nearly tripling the 635 cases reported in 2023 (CDC, 2024). While most cases have mild symptoms, infants and children are at higher risk of severe illness that may require hospitalization.
What is Whooping Cough (Pertussis)?
Whooping Cough (Pertussis) is a respiratory infection caused by bacteria, spread through respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing. Symptoms can range from mild to severe, with a distinctive “whooping” sound in the cough.
Prevention and Safety Measures
Whooping cough is typically preventable through vaccination, but immunity can decrease over time. Here’s how you can help reduce the spread of pertussis and other respiratory diseases this winter:
- Practice Respiratory Etiquette: Cover your cough and wear a mask.
- Perform Hand Hygiene: Regular handwashing is your best defense against the spread of disease.
- Stay Up to Date with Vaccinations: Ensure you and your family are up to date with all CDC-recommended immunizations.
- Check with Your PCP: See if you are due for a booster dose of Tdap.
